English

All pupils are entitled to a progressive and comprehensive English programme which embraces current Statutory Orders of the National Curriculum and takes into account individual interests and needs.

Pupils will have access to all components of current National Curriculum programmes of study, which should include the Communication and Language and Literacy Early Learning Goals in the EYFS and English at Key Stages 1 and 2 in order that pupils may work towards the expected levels of performance as set out in current National Curriculum descriptors. The planning and delivery of each unit of work will ensure that each pupil will have the opportunity to:

  • acquire and develop new skills in reading, writing and communication
  • select and apply appropriate skills and compositional ideas
  • evaluate their own and others' performance in order to improve
  • gain knowledge and understanding of the English language and its use
  • make links with other areas of the curriculum.

English is taught both as a discrete subject and also through themed, cross curricular lessons enabling pupils to write and continue reading through the day. The content of the English curriculum is detailed within the plans contained on the School Curriculum page.

As your child moves into Key Stage 2, they will participate in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program, which is the reading system used in KS2. You can read more details about the AR program below.
