Phonics

Children are taught phonics, following Education Endowment Foundation guidance, using Letters and Sounds and Flying with Phonics.

Pupil attainment and progress through the phonic stages is recorded at the end of each year in Key Stage 1 (and for children who still need phonics input in Key Stage 2).

Phonics screening test results

In 2018 73% of all year1 pupils met expected standard for the phonics screening test (below national average of 82%). 81% of non-mobile pupils met the expected standard.

Phonics progress

In 2018, 88% of pupils left reception at phase 3 Phonics or above: 35% were working within Phase 4 or above; 17% of these already in Phase 5. In year 1, 90% of children were working at phase 5 or above: 15% already on to phase 6. In year 2, a stunning 90% of children achieved phase 6 (this is a 15% improvement from 2016).
