E Safety

At Bassingbourn Community Primary School, we aim to provide an environment where our children can achieve their full potential by feeling safe, secure, and supported. As a result, we are committed to preventing and addressing bullying behaviours, as demonstrated by our ‘Anti-Bullying’ and ‘E-Safety’ policies.

Over more recent years, bullying behaviour has developed to involve emotional bullying conducted anonymously through Internet blogging and/or social networking websites and apps, such as Tik Tok, Instagram and Snapchat. As we have become increasingly aware of instances involving our own children, we have begun to consider how we can address cyber-bullying in school. Our lessons have been dedicated to analysing and discouraging these behaviours. In PSHE, the children explore decision-making in the context of online communications and relationships. Our Computing lessons provide opportunities for the children to learn the behaviours and expectations of safe and responsible digital citizens. In addition, we have written a parent guide for apps used by children and this can be found on our school website. Please note that many apps used by children regularly have a required age for use, for example Snapchat (13), Facebook (13), Instagram (13) and Whatsapp (16).

As you know, some bullying behaviours occur off school grounds and outside of school hours, where it is difficult for us to intervene or support the children. However, we still want to be part of the solution. As school staff, we understand the importance of our partnership with you. We urge you to take time to speak about this very important issue with your children and regularly check their understanding and use of apps and social networking websites. Further support on how to check social media, films, television show etc. can be found at Common Sense Media following the link below:
