Year 6 Curriculum
Each term our units are carefully planned to ensure all the objectives for Year 6 are taught in an appropriate sequence. You can find out all about the content of each subject area by visiting our Curriculum Page and selecting the subject you are interested in. We are also preparing the children for the end of Key Stage SATs and their eventual transition into secondary education.
Please see our Curriculum Overview below. In addition, our Termly Curriculum Newsletter will also provide you with the key dates and an overview of all the exciting learning that will be taking place that term.
Year 6 Curriculum 2024-2025 can be found on the school website - School Curriculum an overview can be seen here.

Reminders
PE: Both Year 6 classes will have their PE lessons on a Friday afternoon with Mr Mikelson. The children are required to wear their school uniform in the morning and will need to change in the school changing rooms during lunch time.
Water bottles: Kindly ensure that your child has a water bottle with them each day, these can be replenished during the school day.
News and events: Coming soon!
Home Learning: Year 6 will be receiving weekly homework. There will be work on spellings, handwriting, comprehension & SPAG work (both aligned to SAT style questions), and Arithmetic.
We recommend that children read for at least 15 minutes every day and that parents regularly listen to their children read. We would also ask that children use Times Table Rock Stars every day for a minimum of 5 minutes to practice their times tables.
Maths: We will be starting our learning journey by looking at integers and decimals.
English: Year 6 will begin Autumn 1 with our first Talk 4 Writing Unit on writing a Narrative, using Poilus (a WW2 trench warfare cartoon video) as our stimulus.
Humanities: We will be learning about World War II in both our history lessons and Geography lessons. IN History, we will learn about the effects and impact the war had on the World and Europe in particular. In Geography we will learn about the movement of soldiers and map the changes over time of the boundary countries held throughout the War using maps to support our learning.
Reading: All children will be encouraged to read, both at school and at home and will have access to appropriate level books from the school library.
Recommended Books for Year 6
Recommended books for Year 6 - Year 6 recommended reads
Reading is a great way to improve learning progress in all curriculum areas. We understand it is often difficult for parents and carers to decide which books to buy for their children. The link above will take you to the Books for Topics Recommended Reads page.
How to Support Your Child at Home
Reading - listen to your child read three times a week for at least 10 minutes, more if you can.
Maths - opportunities to practise our maths skills can be found everywhere, shops, car number plates, the park - all over. What maths can you make when you are with your child?
